Phil Duncan graduated on the Wood, Metal, Ceramics and Plastics course at Brighton Polytechnic in 1982. He has been working as a practicing artist since 1996 in Lewes, East Sussex.

Using aesthetic themes from African art, traditional and contemporary studio pottery as well as early twentieth century abstract fine art he has devised a visual language of his own to articulate his wit and humour, an underlying feature of his work. The organic asymmetrical forms and hard edge decorative motifs contain references to architecture, music, mathematics and numbers and are applied in an instinctive and playful manner.

His individually made pieces are termed as ‘pots’ and not simply as hollow sculptures. They are not functional containers, in the traditional sense, but instead depositories of the artist’s thoughts, observations, experiences and ideas about how we interact with the world.

The duel aspect of each pot plays a significant role allowing him to decorate the two resulting surfaces in alternative ways. This he likens to an A and B side of a vinyl record or the first and second takes of a Jazz improvisation. This is also a way of representing twin personalities, a common attribute in many people regardless as to whether they are or are not born a Gemini as he is.

His truly unique pieces of art have a wide appeal that works on many levels and have, subsequently, become popular with many private collectors nationally and abroad.

Phil worked part-time as a teacher of art until 2010 and is always keen to maintain his links with education. He has fulfilled a number of artist in residence placements at schools and with community groups locally and throughout the country.
